The story
Jaap Versteegh – owner of Pygmalion – tells you the background story of this bronze sculpture.
“This work of sculptor Han Wezelaar (1901-1984) was discovered a few years ago at an auction in The Hague. Wezelaar was one of the most important Dutch sculptors of the 20th century. This one-meter-high bronze sculpture was not included in his large oeuvre catalogue by art historian Jan Teeuwissen, because the sculpture was not yet known.
Professor Jan Teeuwisse, director of the Museum Beelden aan Zee, speaks of "a beautiful discovery." The image is shown in a photograph from 1942 of the studio of Wezelaar in Laren. It shows the influence of Aristide Maillol and probably was commissioned. It is only cast once, making this a unique piece.”
